History and Beliefs

First Christian Church (FCC) is a member of the Disciples of Christ denomination founded on American soil in the 19th century on the ideals of unity in Christ with diversity in practice and beliefs.

FCC, established in San Jose in 1868, is an open and affirming shalom congregation. Our practice and beliefs are characterized by:

Freedom of Belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

Open Communion. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

The Ministry of Believers. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

Interfaith Harmony and Respect. Disciples see God at work in the faiths and beliefs of other religions. We seek to understand and honor all religions as we work to build a just and peaceful world.
